Keyboard Performance on an album that captures the performance of lively, new-age jazz-fusion, recorded at southern oregon university

I work full-time in the field of music, going where opportunities take me and at the same time forging a path as a composer and band-leader. I have my B.A. in Music from Southern Oregon University. I’m a classically-trained pianist with over 15 years of formal study and private lessons, and self-taught in jazz and composition.

Notable performances from 2018 include opening for hip-hop legends Devin the Dude (O’Ryan’s Irish Pub), Afroman (Ashland Armory) and Immortal Technique (Ashland Armory) with Bremer and The Bouray. In 2019, I performed with the Lesa Terry quartet at The First Presbyterian Church of Medford for their Jazz Vespers segment, opening for Chicago at the Britt Festival with The Don’t Stop, and opening for Diana Krall with the Eclectrik Quartet.

I’ve performed with many of the Rogue Valley’s local bands over the years. This includes The Rogue Suspects, 100 Watt Mind, Southern Oregon Jazz Orchestra (SOJO), High Society Orchestra, Timberline Express, Derek Deon, The Bouray, Bremer, Hello America, Jazz Eclipse, and Modern Durf.

I’ve performed and/or music-directed 13 musicals since 2013. I’m currently the musical director at Ashland High School. Musical direction credits include Grease: the Musical and In the Heights at Phoenix High School, and Priscilla: Queen of the Desert at the Camelot Theatre.

I often work as an accompanist in various contexts. I’ve accompanied and directed church choirs, working with the Grace Lutheran Church of Ashland, First Christian Church of Medford, St. Luke’s Episcopal in Grants Pass, and First United Methodist Church in Ashland. I accompany students for competitions, having worked with Southern Oregon University, North Medford HS, South Medford HS, Talent MS, Phoenix MS, and Ashland HS. I’ve worked as an auditions accompanist for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Camelot Theatre, Oregon Cabaret Theatre, Southern Oregon University, and Randall Theatre. I was the collaborative pianist for the American School of Eurythmy from 2017-2019, performing challenging concert repertoire and accommodating 8-9 hour days of rehearsals. Currently, I work for the Rogue Valley Youth Choruses as an accompanist for the Cantare choir.

Other odd jobs include composing gigs from sites such as Fiverr and AirGigs. I offer services for original song composition in nearly any genre, chart notation, transcription, synth/organ/piano recording, musical theatre MIDI practice tracks (at a fraction of the cost of what MTI will charge), and really anything else having to do with a keyboard.

Ongoing creative projects include my live hip-hop band What’s Good ft. Jaya Raise, original rock/funk band The Don’t Stop ft. Shae Celine, Martin Behnke’s original jazz big-band Timberline Express, and homegrown genre-bending indie-rock/RnB group Derek Deon + The Vaughns.

“My studio is open for ages 10 and up and experience levels ranging from beginners to advanced players. I specialize in classical, jazz, blues, hip hop, improvisation, composition, and songwriting. I can help you learn virtually any style of keyboard or piano music.

My teaching style centers around encouraging a growth mindset, and in valuing progress over perfection. My lesson plans will vary from student to student depending on their needs and goals. I offer a free preview lesson for those who might be interested in studying with me.

Please feel free to reach out and send me an email if you have any questions and/or are interested in lessons.”

Classical Repertoire

Ian studied classical piano performance at Southern Oregon University with Dr. Alexander Tutunov and holds his B.A. in Music Performance. He has taken jazz lessons from Pat Moran McCoy, Kiefer Shackelford, and studied composition with Michael Leibson.

As a teacher, accompanist and performer:

My granddaughter has been taking lessons from Ian for over 6 months and she enjoys his teaching style, making the lessons fun as well as a positive learning experience. He is very patient and understanding of different levels of abilities. Ian has also accompanied her for her solo and ensemble competition. He is an excellent pianist and I would highly recommend him for lessons for all ages.

I had the pleasure of engineering a location piano recording with Ian. He is a consummate professional. He was prepared, easy to work with, and delivered excellent performances.
— James Abdo, BrokenWorks Productions, LLC
I’ve worked with many accompanists over my 20+ years of teaching and Ian has been one of my favorites hands down. The parents of my violin students especially appreciate how sensitive he is to the volume of tiny instruments. I appreciate the fact that he’s able to handle each unexpected scenario quickly and professionally. He is positive and encouraging with my students without encroaching on my teaching role. He is great at sight reading all styles of music and fabulous at following drastically varying tempos. He is even able to help “lead” students who have memory slips. He is hard working and happy to try to accommodate difficult and rigorous rehearsal schedules.
— Heidi Strahm, Assistant Director of Siskiyou Violins
My daughter has been taking lessons from Ian for almost a year. Ian has elevated her skills tremendously, he challenges her and never accepts mediocre work. I love that he doesn’t move quickly through lessons, he makes sure she fully masters a skill before moving on. I’m very pleased to have found him.
— Angelica Baida, Parent
We have been thoroughly impressed with Ian and his professionalism.
— Nick Baida, Parent
Ian is a wonderfully talented pianist and musician. I enjoy working with Ian and have learned a lot about music from collaborating with him! He has great directing and rehearsal leading skills and is very easy to work with!
— Geo Betus, SOU Music Student
Ian is a wonderful piano teacher for both our children. He meets them where they are and inspires and motivates them. They are so pleased (and so are we!) with their progress. They enjoy playing and have built a solid piano practice work ethic with Ian. We are grateful for his gentle and stellar instruction.
